We're celebrating a Summer of Varda this August. It isn't complicated: we are simply taking time to revisit and rediscover one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Agnès Varda (1928-2019).
Agnès Varda has been called the “Grandmother of the New Wave,” a well-meaning but misleading descriptor, given that she was the same age or even younger than most of the canonical members of the movement.
In many respects Varda was there first, directing her dazzlingly original first film La Pointe Courte at the age of 26. With it, she set the template for a movement whose principles and concerns she would gleefully subvert in later years. And in characteristically breezy fashion, Varda would switch between feature-length or short, fiction or documentary, big film or small over the course of a more than 60-year career.
Discovering and rediscovering Varda's work is the perfect way to see out the summer. You're sure to stumble upon something that will stay with you for a long time.
