Varda described Daguerréotypes, which turns the inquisitive gaze of her Los Angeles films towards a few residents of the Rue Daguerre where she lived, as “more or less a casual look at my neighbors.” What she discovers there is perhaps just as remarkable as in any of her other explorations. As she herself noted, this movie could easily serve as “an archive for archeologists and sociologists in the next century.”
