It often takes a foreigner to appreciate the peculiarities of American cultural life. And there are few better examples of this phenomenon than Varda’s Los Angeles documentaries. The murals in this entry are largely the work of black and Chicano artists in areas of Los Angeles like Venice Beach or Watts; Varda is able to render them in all their majesty, teasing out the sociological implications of the act of mural-making. Who else on the cultural scene of the time but this tiny, adventurous French documentarian was affording these people such respect and attention?
