Each year Marseille comes alive with the celebrated international film festival FIDMarseille, an event that takes place at the beating heart of one of the most vibrant ports in the world.
Like Marseille itself, the FID is a place of great diversity. It has now managed to take place twice during the pandemic, stubbornly refusing to compromise its mission to promote only the most bracingly original forms of cinema, even in the face of a world compelling it to give up. Here we celebrate that with a special focus on 10 female filmmakers from past editions of the festival, singled out by its programmers as some of the works from recent years that bear extra emphasis.
Whole schools of filmmaking are practically contained in these ten short and feature-length films. By working your way through the movies in this selection, you'll voyage into a landscape of non-fiction cinema as vibrant, unclassifiable, and singular as Marseille itself. An international panorama of cinematic styles epic and small-scale, with our focus on FIDMarseille you will find celebrated films that have toured festivals around the world as well as more modest productions who have only now disembarked on their journey.
