Stop-motion film Playground shows a battle between nature and culture, between organic ryegrass and artificial turf. American Football is played on rectangular fields, measuring 120 yards (110 meters) long and 160 feet (49 m) wide. These dimensions defined the framework for this film. Made with images found in Google Earth.
Colin Huizing (curator at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam) writes: De Ruijter collected images of American Football fields and placed them in sequence to create the projection entitled Playground (2014). The result is fascinating: various representations suddenly loom up from an abstract series of pictures of field lines with identical measurements. They are symbols of diverse sports clubs that are unmistakably American.
