A retrospective of the work of John Gianvito, an American radical. Featuring experimental documentaries produced between 2007 to 2023.
Originally a film programmer and based in Boston, Massachusetts, John Gianvito has, since 2001, carved out his own space on the outskirts of the American documentary industry. There he has consistently produced challenging and uncompromisingly radical political non-fiction films for more than twenty years.
Our selection of Gianvito's work features both parts of his truly epic investigation into the legacy of former US military bases in the Philippines—and the toxic contamination they produced in the surrounding populations—his unconventional documentary "biopic" of Helen Keller, Her Socialist Smile, the political anthology Gianvito initiated about the war in Afghanistan, Far From Afghanistan, two new short works—one about the war in Ukraine and one about those lost to COVID-19—and of course his singular adaptation of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind, considered one of the essential American political films of the past two decades.
