We have teamed up with BAFICI (Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente) for a special program of films from the past and present of the prestigious Argentinian festival’s program.

As was the case with so many festivals, their 2020 edition was cancelled due to the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. In response, we joined with the festival programmers to be sure that, with this focus, we were bringing you the best BAFICI has to offer.

From Monday June 22, you can uncover a treasure trove of key works from BAFICI’s recent past—from the last few years as well as from the latest edition that wasn’t to be. You’ll be able to pore over these movies for a full two weeks, part of the largest individual focus on Latin American cinema in our platform’s history.

Our official selection of feature length titles were almost exclusively drawn from the three competitions—International, Latin American, and Argentinian—stretching from 2016 through to the present. These titles include recent work by some of the very best Argentinian or Latin American filmmakers, including Néstor Frenkel, María Álvarez, Sergio Wolf, and Luis 'Hitoshi' Diaz, as well as presenting many vital works from lesser known artists whose star is rising.

Festivals are the incubators for great cinema. We have to ensure that the young films entering our world in 2020 can, for now, survive without them. We’re standing at an historical juncture when not only the world of film festivals but the entire globe is forced into a process of transformation; a transformation whose exact character is as yet unclear to any of us. But we still have movies, and we have to adapt to these shifts and support their makers in whatever ways we can, as viewers, as distributors, as festivals.

Como fue el caso de muchos festivales, su edición del 2020 fue cancelada debido a los efectos de la pandemia. Nuestra respuesta fue juntarnos con sus programadores para asegurarnos de que, con este foco, traeremos lo mejor que BAFICI tiene para ofrecer.

Desde el lunes 22 de junio se podrán ver una serie de trabajos clave en el pasado reciente del festival—tanto de sus anteriores ediciones como de la última, la que no pudo ser. Podrán explorar estas películas durante dos semanas enteras, parte del foco más grande que esta plataforma haya hecho sobre Cine Latinoamericano.

Nuestra selección oficial de 19 largometrajes fueron extraidas de tres de sus competencias—Internacional, Latinoamericana y Argentina—desde 2016 hasta el presente. Los títulos incluyen trabajos recientes de algunos de los mejores cineastas Argentinos y Latinoamericanos, incluyendo a Néstor Frenkel, María Álvarez, Sergio Wolf y Luis ‘Hitoshi’ Diaz, así como también obras fundamentales de artistas aun no tan conocidos cuya carrera va en ascenso.

Los festivales son incubadoras de grandes obras. Tenemos que asegurarnos de que las jóvenes películas que entran al mundo en 2020 puedan, por ahora, sobrevivir sin ellos. Estamos pasando por un momento histórico en el cual no sólo el universo de los festivales de cine sino también el mundo entero se ve obligado a entrar en un proceso de transformación; una transformación cuya forma final está aun por verse. Pero todavía tenemos las películas, y debemos adaptarnos a estos cambios y apoyar a los cineastas como podamos: como espectadores, como distribuidores, como festivales.
