Women Make Waves International Film Festival (WMWIFF), established in 1993, is one of Taiwan’s major film festivals and the largest one dedicated to supporting female filmmakers.
For the first time, Taiwan Docs is collaborating with WMWIFF to bring part of its 30th Anniversary Special Program to DAFilms!
The original program “Inventing the Time: 30th Anniversary Special Presentation” first showcased at WMWIFF in 2023, featured 27 films selected from the festival’s archive spanning from 1993 to 2022. More than a retrospective, it also sought to expand outward, including significant works that had been previously overlooked or left out of the past editions.
While retracing the past footsteps, the program also engages with the current gender landscape in Taiwanese society. Topics range from personal growth, family, marriage, intimate relationships, and explorations of desire, to issues such as ethnicity, environment, housing justice, history, and human rights. The broad spectrum of these themes reveals that female filmmakers have never been absent from any subject matter.
In this collaboration, we present 13 titles — mostly documentaries, along with a few experimental and animated works — to share this meaningful program with a broader international audience on DAFilms. Looking back, these works are passcodes not only to the past but also to the future.
The 13 featured works will stream worldwide for free over two weeks, from August 15 to August 29.
We’ve also recorded a special Q&A video for Life With Happiness. Feel free to check it out after watching the film:
