The career of Swiss filmmaker Thomas Imbach has been defined above all by a tireless pursuit of unclassifiable forms, incendiary styles, and newer and ever bolder forms of expression. The sheer breadth of this comprehensive 10-film retrospective will give you a very real sense of what his cinema is all about.
From Monday, 22 November, you will be able to dive in to the work of one of the most original Swiss filmmakers at work in the world today: Thomas Imbach. We have partnered with Swiss Films, the national agency for the promotion of Swiss cinema across the globe, on a retrospective of Imbach's work that stretches from 1994's dazzling Well Done, a portrait of a Zurich-based financial data center at the dawn of the internet age, to 2020's NEMESIS, an epic film shot (in 35mm!) from the window of Imbach's studio.
Why "No Short Cuts"? That comes from the filmmaker's manifesto, a credo stating that every task must be undertaken with unabating passion and rigour. NEMESIS was produced before the pandemic, debuting in April 2020 at Visions du Réel, but its trailblazing form of cinema—produced at home and observing the world through the frame of a window, as was the case with his masterpiece Day is Done—has uncannily anticipated so much of the cinema that this crisis has seemingly induced in filmmakers. What makes Imbach different? He takes no short cuts.
