Parodying the format of an illustrated lecture, Shepherd’s Delight is a satirical exploration of the origins of humour that moves between the absurd and the deadly serious, revealing the dark as well as the light side of jokes. Many of Smith’s films involve humour, but unlike his other works Shepherd’s Delight confronts the problem of humour head-on, referring directly (since a large part of the film is composed of jokes and their analysis) to the viewer’s perception of the film itself.
