Marko Grba Singh

Marko Grba Singh was born in 1988 in Belgrade. He is currently on PhD studies in film direction at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. His short documentaries "At Least We’ve Met’’ and ‘’Pale’’ had their world premieres at Visions du Réel International Documentary Film Festival in Nyon in 2012 and 2013. His mid-length film "Abdul & Hamza", which deals with the fate of Somali refugees on European soil, premiered at the FIDMarseille in 2015, where it received a Special Jury Award. At the beginning of 2016, as part of the Looking China project, he went to China and filmed short documentary "Stars of Gaomeigu", for which he got an award for the most innovative short film at the Visions du Réel in 2017. He directed the short film "Tesaurus’’ which premiered at Doclisboa in 2020. Latest film he made is feature length documentary "Rampart" which had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival. He is an alumni of Berlinale Talents, Locarno academy and FIDCampus. Marko is the Artistic Director of Belgrade Documentary Film Festival (Beldocs) and one of the programmers of Zagreb Human Rights Film Festival.

His works often border documentary and fiction, exploring themes of dreams, memory and nostalgia. They also shed light on the struggles and triumphs of individuals abandoned or forgotten from society, bringing their stories to a wider audience and sparking important conversations about social justice. He likes to challenge stereotypes and experiment in unconventional film language. He is a filmmaker whose work reflects a deep empathy for the human experience. His films are both visually striking and emotionally resonant, inviting viewers to engage with complex issues and confront their own preconceptions.
