Vladimír Čech (1914–1992) started his film career in the 1930s as an actor in Before the Finals by Vladislav Vančura. As assistant director, he co-operated with E. F. Burian in theatre. During the war, he participated in the communist anti-Nazi resistance and started making short films. In the post-war years, he made the documentary I Do Not Understand about the life stories of children from Lidice, besides Tax Morals and other films, in Short Film Prague. However, he is mostly known as feature film director. In the 1960s, he made successful detective stories featuring Karel Höger as Captain Tůma that are popular until today (A 105 p.c. Alibi, 1959; A Hamis Alibi, 1961; Alibi on the Lake, 1965). He was an active filmmaker during the normalization as well.
