Nikos Megrelis
(Greece)

Nikos Megrelis started his professional career in February 1980, working in daily newspapers “To Vima” & “Ta NEA”. He has been editor in chief, diplomatic and political editor-analyst at the T.V. channels “Mega” and “Antenna”. Editorial associate of leading English review “Odyssey” (1999-2004). During 2001-2004 was producer and anchor of weekly news program “50 Minutes” (NET- Greek Public Television) where he continues to work. Specializes in issues of foreign politics and international affairs, has a long experience on European Union affairs. During his professional career he has interviewed leading political and historical figures: Isabel Allende, Yasser Arafat, Jacques Delores, Giorgio Napolitano, Richard Holbrooke, Theodor Zifkof, Abdulah Gul and many others. His interview with President of Turkey Suleiman Demirel, during the Imia crisis in 1996, when Greece and Turkey were on the brink of war, became a reference point for improvement in relations between the two countries. Since, then a member of the journalists committee for the two countries repprochment, has participated in all meetings that have taken place. In 2002-2003 lectured journalism, in the post-graduate Mass Media and Communication Department of the Athens University. In 2006 he published two books: “A Greek century in Cairo 1904-2004,” and “Thoughts within 300 words”. In 2002 received the Botsis Foundation prestigious award for the quality of his television programmes. In 2003 was awarded the European prize “Eurocomenius 2003”, for his documentary on the Prestige wreckage and the environmental disaster at the coastlines of Spain. In 2007, received the “K. KALLIGAS” award from European Journalists Association – Greek section, for his professional ethics and European orientation in journalism. During 2003-2005 was elected General Secretary of the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (JUADN). Member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Journalists’ (IFJ) from 2004 till 2010.
