Debbie Melnyk was born in 1958 in Toronto. She graduated with a Journalism degree from Ryerson University and worked as a televison news producer in England and Germany for 6 years before returning to North America where she worked as a documentary producer. She later attended film school at New York University and moved to Los Angeles working as a televison producer for eight years before returning to Canada.
