Susan Mogul
(United States)

Turning her barbed wit both inwards and outwards this feminist filmmaker reflects on women’s private and public lives. Having been involved with video since the early 1970s, Susan Mogul is a pioneer of the medium. Initially producing an important series of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos in the 1970s, her practice quickly expanded to more complicated and experimental forms of narrative, that include feature-length work.
Since 1973 her work has had a first person presence, been performative, irreverent and explored the extraordinary in the ordinary. Driving Men (2008) her most comprehensive autobiographical film, has received critical acclaim in the USA and in Europe.
A Guggenheim recipient, Mogul’s work has screened at film festivals, in museums, on television, and is taught at universities- nationally and internationally. She has received commissions and fellowships from ITVS (Independent Television Service), the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Getty Trust. Recently Mogul’s video art was featured in The Getty Museum’s “California Video,” the Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her first retrospective will be presented in 2009 at the Nyon International Film Festival in Switzerland.
