David Gutierrez Camps
(Spain)

David Gutiérrez Camps is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Barcelona. His work combines two opposite trends: one that explores the depths of minimalism and another that pushes him towards extreme manipulation. His latest works have been screened in international film festivals such as CPH DOX in Copenhagen or Images Festival in Toronto as well as programmed in venues like Anthology Film Archives in New York or Le Bal in Paris, along with works by authors like Raymond Depardon or Stan Brakhage.

He grew up in Vidreres (Girona, Spain), 12 km away from the Mediterranean shores and moved to Barcelona when he was 17 years old eager to experience film. He studied Audiovisual Communication in Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) and graduated in 2004. During this time, he also participated in an exchange program that brought him to FAMU (Prague, Czech Republic) for one semester. In 2004 David moved to Amsterdam (Netherlands) where he struggled with digital technology while washing dishes in a fancy restaurant. Returning to Barcelona in late 2005, he started a career as freelance editor. His credits include such feature documentaries as Utopia 79 and Hollywood at War, in addition to multiple television shows and commercials. He also directed in 2005 a 30 minutes documentary called Terreny de Joc(Playground), produced by TVC (Catalan Public Television).

In 2008 Fundacio Riera Gubau gave David a grant to study in the US and make films, and he enrolled in the Documentary Film Program at the New School in New York. In the Big Apple, David produced his most successful films up to date: Water in the Boat (finalist award in Curt.Doc Festival) and 175 (CPH DOX, Images Festival, Loop Festival). Back in Barcelona in late 2009, he focuses on directing and works for brands such as Skype or HP and creates music videos for musicians as Sanjosex or Guillamino, while preparing his most ambitious project: The Juan Bushwick Diaries.
