Malcolm Zammit
(Malta)

Malcolm worked in the newspaper industry for 21 years as typesetter, page designer and systems administrator. After completing his first degree in Media & Communication studies at the University of Malta, he came to Brunel University, West London to read for an MA in Documentary Practice in 2007. His work has been screened during events at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the BFI London Southbank. One of his latest works, a short documentary titled A Long Way, was screened at the flEXiff 09 Experimental Film Festival in Sydney in September 2009.
Together with colleague David Plans, Malcolm recently produced One Foot off the Ground, a semi-improvised experimental audio-visual piece which they performed live during the Sound Source at King's Place in May 2009. Malcolm's main responsibilities at the School of Arts are centred around the Journalism and Film & TV subject areas. He also runs various technical workshops for the BA Journalism, MA Journalism, MA International Journalism and BA Drama courses and delivers lectures on the Alternative Practices module of the MA Documentary course. He is particularly interested in media education the use of technology within an educational setting, and in exploring ways of integrating the documentary medium into the education process. His main research interest is the exploration of alternative documentary practices, particularly the use of the documentary form as a vehicle for idiosyncratic self-expression, and the possibility of creating audio-visual documents - partly through a process of improvisation - that can live simultaneously as a 'traditional' AV piece, a live performance, or an installation.
