LIAO Hsien-sheng was born in 1943. After graduating from the Department of Film and Theatre at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, he received training briefly in Japan. Around 1968, he started working at the Taiwan Film Studio as a cinematographer for both fictional and documentary films. His work had won the Golden Horse Award for Excellent Documentary. From 1973 on, LIAO began working for the Government Information Office. There, he wrote and directed documentaries, while also filming the country's progressive development and the international visits undertaken by senior state officials.
