Herz Frank
(Latvia)

Herz Frank (1926-2013) was one of the most famous documentary filmmakers of Latvia. At the beginning of 1960he was among the first to establish the so-called Riga poetic documentary school – the Latvian “new wave”. Since then Herz Frank’s filmography includes more than 80 films, many of which have justly been included in the golden funds of Latvian film history. During his life Herz Frank has received Life contribution award in cinema, among which is also the recognition by the Latvian National film festival (2001).

Graduated from the School of Law in Moscow, USSR (1945 – 1947). Worked as a journalist, lecturer and advertisement designer in Vladimir from 1952 till 1954. Worked in the newspapers "Padomju Jaunatne" and "Rigas Balss" in Latvia from 1954. Starting from 1959 worked at Riga Film Studios as a photographer, editor and a documentary film script writer and director. Directed more than 30 documentaries. His debut as a director of documentary films is The Salt Bread (1965).

Has been living in Israel since 1993. Received many international awards, more than 160 publications in books, magazines, newspapers all over the world (including an article in the 4-volume "History of the Soviet Film Art", 1986). He wrote the book "The Chart of Ptolomy"(Moscow, 1975) which discusses different aspects of the documentary cinema.
