Life Extended continues Bigert & Bergström's exploration of the human strife to control life and death. In this film we meet the gerontologist who believes we will be immortal in the near future, the architects who construct spaces to slow down the aging process, the monk who runs for a thousand days in order to strengthen his spirit for it's immortal journey, the street kids who live in the moment, and many others. Being opposed to the static image of the stairway of life, the film is constructed as a relay race where people are moving towards the viewer. “Today ageing is subject to control”, as put by a biochemist. The speed with which this biotechnological development is moving indicates that the coming generations will have very long lives indeed.
Initiated as a work of art the film envisions a contemporary Memento Mori where death will soon be nothing but a memory.
