Armed with a laptop or a small video camera, touring with his theatre company or wandering the world alone, Pippo Delbono communicates fragments of his life and thinking. Tiny details often give rise to unexpected associations: a piece of wasteland evokes the memory of Pina Bausch. Sometimes the tone is gentler, as in a dialogue with his mother; or when a medical examination leads to a classic piece of Italian comedy. A film of great freedom, borne up by the music of Balanescu, Amore Carne is a journey into the present, in the company of friends: Irène Jacob and Laurie Anderson, Tilda Swinton and Marie-Agnès Gillot. “Amore Carne is inspired by Rimbaud. Rimbaud speaks of a restlessness of the soul, a longing for light, for spirituality – a word that frightens us. I believe that cinema, art, should speak of this movement of the spirit which is behind everything, of the deep meaning of life and death. Rimbaud speaks of that, of a madness that becomes enlightenment. A love that cannot detach itself from the physical body” (PD).
