Hanka and Bronka are best friends. Officially retired, they live quiet, hardworking lives, alone but content, following their husbands’ loss and their children’s departure abroad. Inseparable and full of mischief, the two women float together down the gentle current of daily life in a Polish village near the Ukrainian border in northeastern Romania. But their peaceful routine is suddenly disturbed by the war in Ukraine, unsettling their days, their sense of calm, and the certainties they once held. Fear creeps in, and their children begin to question whether they can remain independent. Sooner or later, a difficult decision will have to be made: leave the village, and each other, or stay, whatever the risk. In the meantime, these soul sisters eat, sing, and (sometimes) dance together. Captured through Emilia Sniegoska’s tender, affectionate lens, they radiate a luminous and heartwarming sense of sisterhood that brings us both to laughter and tears.
