The Valley of the Bees came about as a result of efforts to reuse the props and costumes from the director’s previous opus, Marketa Lazarová – hitherto the most expensive Czechoslovak film of all time. It is highly philosophical; a non-romanticised view of the Middle Ages, which, instead of on battle scenes, focuses on its characters - a young aristocrat, a part of the Knights Order since childhood, who escapes the castle where he grew up indoctrinated and travels with his companion. Authorities viewed certain elements as controversial and a different, shorter version aired on TV. Though not very popular at the time of its release, today the film is a Czechoslovak classic.
