Carl Junghans’ film captures the tragic story of an ageing laundress whose drudgery and toil support a cheating and abusive alcoholic husband. A psychological drama with social themes, it draws from Zola’s novel, The Kill. Although the film’s premiere in Czech theatres in 1930 went almost unnoticed, (largely due to the fact that it is a silent film) it was acknowledged by film historians in Brussels in 1958, and has since undergone digital restoration.
