Before Karel Steklý established himself as a director, he worked for many years as a screenwriter, penning a number of films that are still well-known today. His directorial debut came at the end of World War II with the short film Simpleton for which he also wrote the screenplay. The hero of the story is a drifter who awakens from dreams of richness into a frosty December day, in which he will be confronted with an unexpected moral dilemma: whether he can resist the temptation to exploit the gullibility of the hosts who have provided him help and shelter.
