He refers to himself as a director, script writer, poet and painter, but also grinder, plumber, photo-lab-technician, van driver, comercial traveller with books and promotion officer, text writer. He studied FAMU under Elmar Klos. During his studies he made two short films Nebe a silnice (Heaven and road) and Kamil Lhoták a Pan Pelíšek (Kamil Lhoták and Pan Pelíšek); because of the latter unfinished picture he was made to stop his studies for a year. Karel Vachek, Film&doba 1969, pg. 360-370: „Either a man comes to his work open-minded and meek, or nothing. No by bits exists. Nonsense! He always gets spoiled water, if you give him a film with only ten per cent of it makes art. Talking about art doesn’t work, if I want to say truth. When I express some rules I consider to go for this or that work of art, they look like a demagogic thesis. If I don’t want their stupidity to be offensive, I have to forget them, but that’s not convenient either. I have mentioned certain meaning of conventions before. As the rules are contradictary, so the work of art isn’t friendly to a man, who has made or watched it. Every work is followed by a guilt; and the suffering, which follows the creator’s guilt and which is a part of the work, creates the ethic value of the work and finally its real value.“ Karel Vachek, Kamil Lhoták, the film about the painter.
