In 1991 the Soviet Union disappeared. With the dissolution of communism, western consumerism bled into Russia. Youth culture in Russia started to appropriate western forms of dance music and the drug culture that sometimes comes with it. In Moscow the genre of techno emerges along with the rise of ecstasy and LSD consumption. The Russian capital begins to beat with a very different rhythm. Olga Darfy, the director, provides reminiscences of her experiences of Moscow, her youth and the tumultuous social and political period she lived through during her 20s. Her friend Vanya Salmaksov one of the creators of the parties called Gagarin Parties disappeared in 1998. Darfy decides to tell about this vertiginous time from fragments of experiences, interviews, archives, and memories. The question she keeps asking herself and the people she meets in this journey: where is Vania? As well as being a pertinent account of a society in immense upheaval, the documentary also seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Vanya Salmaksov.
