This fantastical comedy from director Vojtěch Jasný won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1963 and was co-written with Jiří Brdečka. In a three-part role, Jan Werich portrays the wise storyteller, castle warden, and magician Oliva, who arrives in a small town with the beautiful artist Diana (Emília Vášáryová), and a magical, sunglass wearing, tomcat. When the cat’s sunglasses are removed, the creature is able to unveil the true characters of the adult humans around him. Liars become tinged with purple, the unfaithful turn yellow, thieves turn grey, and the love-struck turn red. Fearing that they may lose their positions in light of such transparency, several local powerbrokers, a slimy school headmaster, an unassertive janitor, and a crooked restaurant owner, kidnap the tomcat. This timeless classic continues to enthral with its fantastic exteriors, filmed in the historical town of Telč, and multicoloured experimental celluloid techniques.
