Coby is set in a small town in the middle of the American Midwest. Suzanna aged twenty-three, changes gender and becomes a boy: Coby. Coby’s change of gender impacts his whole family who are compelled to reconsider their own perspectives about others and, ultimately, their own identity. The documentary depicts not only a physical metamorphosis, but also a spiritual one, all taking place under the considered gaze of Sonderegger’s affirmative and unusual lens.
