Ladislav Brom 1938 sports comedy was written by Karel Steklý – soon to become a successful director himself – and based on Eduard Bass’ humorous and eponymous book. The film faithfully follows the structure of the book, the focus of which is a team of gifted footballers who are all sons of garage owner Klapzuba. While delving into the temptations of becoming a professional footballer, with the potential of jeopardising family harmony, this easy-viewing movie also features a romantic flare-up involving centre forward Pepík Klapzuba, played by Jan Šebor, and pretty Eva, played by Hana Vítová. The mother and father Klapzuba are played by international stars Theodor Pištěk and Antonie Nedošinská, while other parts are assigned to equally prominent contemporary stars. The footballers are mostly played by non-actors and professional athletes. In its day the film attracted attention not just for its sporting theme, but also for its patriotic feel.
